Watch the Auroras Light Up the Sky in Rare Solar Storm

Updated 645 AM PDT May 11 2024 AP

An Unusually Strong Solar Storm Hitting Earth

A powerful solar storm struck Earth on Friday night, causing the northern lights to glow in the night sky in several countries. The storm was caused by a cluster of sunspots, dark cool regions on the solar surface. Sunspot region 3664 is the most complex sunspot region of the current Solar Cycle thus far.

The huge solar storm is keeping power grid and satellite operators on edge. The storm could cause power outages and disruptions to satellite communications. Stargazers had a treat on Friday night as the extreme solar storm, the strongest in two decades, caused the auroras to light up the sky in a dazzling display.
